Throwaway/Runaway
Throwaway/Runaway had extremely successful showings in 2008 at Riverside Plaza and at City Park for the Democratic National Convention series of events.
An original play about teenage homelessness by the youth of ArtLab, a collaborative program between PlatteForum and Labyrinth Arts Academy, Throwaway/Runaway was created out of a year's worth of improvisations, research, and interviews.
Performed by the youth that created the stories and directed by Jose Mercado, Throwaway/Runaway examines the lives of today's youth who have run away from home or have been forced out of a dysfunctional home. The substitutes youth find for the loss of family and the tragedies that often result in the search for those substitutes are explored.
Craig Volk, award-winning playwright and Professor of Theater & Film at UC Denver, guided the students in writing the script. Fashion designer Mona Lucero added a tough and realistic edge to the costumes for each character the students created.
If you enjoyed Throwaway/Runaway, just wait…look for a new and exciting world premier from these remarkably talented kids in 2009! News to follow in the New Year!
